New Issue Hits Newsstand Tomorrow

I am pleased to announce that tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 5) a new issue of the Xpress will hit our one newsstand! We are extremely excited to get started with the tenth year of Ralston Valley journalism! In less than two days, our staff will be getting together for redesign and we want your help! We need any suggestions, anything we could improve, anything that we should not change, any thoughts at all to make this year the best year of the Xpress yet.

Dear readers,

Another year is over and we would like to thank you for all your support. It’s been a very progressive year in the life of the Xpress. I would especially like to extend my gratitude for your support of this website. Unfortunately, we will be taking a two month break for summer vacation. Check back on August 12 for the start of the Xpress‘s tenth year. On the 12th our Twitter feed will be alive and hopping as well. So check back here and at http://twitter.com/rvhsxpress on August 12.

From the Desk of the Editors: The Digital Age

First things first…We here at the Ralston Valley Xpress have a soft spot for the printed word, and we weep at the recent loss of publications like the Rocky Mountain News and Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

We like to hold our newspaper, dog ear our favorite magazines and ravenously turn the pages of our beloved books. But we are not about to be caught in the dark ages of technological advancement.

Instead, we have succumbed to our fondness for the printed word and subsequently embraced and run with the beauty and wonders of the digital world. And we’re asking, er, pleading with you to jump on board and follow the future of the Xpress on the web.

Do not fret…

We are not getting rid of the printed portion of our paper; we scoured the results of the survey we took earlier in the year about a possible move to an online only version of the Xpress, and understand that it would not be in the best interest of the publication to go that way.

So, while we have listened to your voices, we will be supplementing the monthly hard copy of the Xpress with a digital version that we think is going to work cooperatively with the product we distribute in the building to produce news – including sports scores and stories – on a more timely basis while allowing readers inside the minds of our excellent staffers/bloggers.

Can’t make it to the state football game? Well, we’ll provide you with a running blog of the game and up to the second scores.

Have a test to study for the same night as next year’s Mr. Mustang? We will have an interview with the winner online the same night.

Not sure if we’re going to have school because of the big snow storm? As soon as the district knows, you’ll know.

From the Desk of the Editors: Columbine 10th Anniversary

Ten years ago, on April 20th, 1999 two disgruntled students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold perpetrated the deadliest shooting of any American High School in history. From 11:19 AM-12:08 PM they took the lives of 12 innocent students and a teacher as well as injuring 23 others before committing suicide. Most of us were not even in third grade when it happened, but we all undoubtedly remember it. The Xpress staff would to take some time to reflect and remember the tragedy, and our hearts go out to the families who lost their loved ones to such a heinous crime spree. We also think that we need to continue to move forward in making our schools safe places to be: to recognize and assist “at-risk” students, and to put a stop to the unthinkable before it happens. A decade has passed, and we will always remember. We encourage students to visit the memorial; and would like to note that a candlelight vigil commomorating the 10th anniversary will take place at the Memorial in Clement Park on Sunday, April 19th at 7:30pm. Donations will be accepted on-site and will benefit the memorial itself, and help to keep it a beautiful and peaceful place to reflect. The public is also welcome to attend the CHS 10 Year Memorial Event on April 20th, 2009 at the Clement Park Amphitheater from 5-6 p.m.
