The Greatest Game Ever Played
The sun was starting to fade behind the mountains and the air slowly became crisp and cool. The football team left practice and went up to the soccer field and joined those who were standing in the cold weather witnessing a game that is comparative to the greatest football games in history.
This game could be compared to last year’s Super Bowl between the Cardinals and the Steelers, or the year before between the Giants and the Patriots. Some might say this game actually topped the “Greatest Game Ever Played” in the NFL Championship between Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts who took down the New York Giants. No, this game beat every game in history in terms of a classic battle. The Ralston Valley Powder Puff Championship between Chelsea Roberts and Team Green against Denali Murnan and the 20:1 underdog TEam Yellow.
The First Half
The contest started out with a touchdown by the Team Yellow on the opening drive, only to be answered with a touchdown by the TEam Green. Then the big plays started to come about. Junior Rachel Johnson came up with a big interception for the Team Green. Then senior, Chelsea Roberts, took the ball into the end zone for the go ahead touchdown. The score at this point was 12-6 team green.
Junior, Denali Murnan, was spectacular for Team Yellow. Murnan made big plays on the ground which answered the Team Green’s touchdown to make the score tied again. Both teams exchanged touchdowns again and the score was tied at 18 going into the second half.
The Second Half
The first half was dominated by offense. Now team defense started to shine for half number two. The first big play happened with TEam Yellow threatening in the first minutes of the second half. On fourth down close to the end zone Team Yellow threw a pass in the end zone only to be intercepted by Team Green. A penalty was called against Team Green a which gave Team Yellow another chance. This did not seem to bother Team Green as they held Team Yellow and got the ball back.
Team Green was unable to score following that and Team Yellow got the ball back. This time tTeam Yellow was had red in their eyes as they were able to score on a quarterback sneak by Murnan. Now the score was 24-18.
Team Green put a good drive together and had fourth down near the end zone. Roberts tried to turn the corner on the left side of the field and looked like she had the edge to tie the game, however at the last second the Team Yellow pulled her flag while she was still in the field of play causing a turnover on downs.
One of the most spectacular plays came on the next possesion. Team Yellow on third down threw the ball deep. The ball ended up tipped and Roberts, who was diving backwards to break up the play, found a way to catch the ball before it hit the ground. But Team Yellow held their ground not allowing Team Green to score. Team Green held them again, but still could not get over the hump and Team Yellow got the ball back with only a few minutes left on the clock.
Trying to get the touchdown that would put the game out of reach on third down, Team Green came up with a big sack on Murnan. On fourth down Team Yellow threw a desperation toss but no one was home to catch it. So with a little less than a minute left Team Green needed a lengthy and quick drive to tie. Because of a spectacular throw and catch they got close to the end zone. Then on the final play in regulation Roberts ran a play similar to one Tim Tebow ran in the National Championship last year. She looked as if she were going to run but at the last instant she threw the ball in to the end zone to an open receiver for a touchdown. The game was meant for overtime.
Overtime
Team Green got the ball first. Unable to score on their first two plays, they decided to go with the player that put the team on her back to win the championship. Roberts ran a run to the left side. Team Yellow couldn’t stop it. Roberts ran into the end zone for the lead. Team Yellow had to score to prolong the suspense for a second overtime.
Good defense forced Team Yellow into a tough fourth down. This was for the game. There was an incomplete pass thrown into the end zone. Team Green started to jump and scream, believing they had won, but a penalty against Team Green gave Team Yellow one last shot. So they threw it into the endvzone one last time, and it was CAUGHT! However, the receiver had a foot out of bounds when she caught the ball. The pass was ruled incomplete giving the win to Team Green, the Cash Money Millionaires.
This surely was the greatest game ever played.
