Oh Captain My Captain

The lights come up, on a cool autumn night; all eyes turn to the field to cheer on their team. But who do the football players look to? This is where team captains come in. Often voted to the position by their teammates, the captains take it upon themselves to be the leaders on the field off the field, physically, emotionally, and mentally. These players are seniors who provide an example for the other players to follow. When asked how it felt to be recognized for his efforts, team captain Kyle Corbin said, “It was awesome. It made me feel great and made we want to try even harder.” After Coach Matt Lloyd was asked about his teams’ captains he had nothing but praise and good words toward them, immediately sprouting off their individual strengths, and the overall outcome of their leadership. “They have the effort everyday and they’re always tryin as hard as they can, not to mention they’re good students and are involved in the school as a whole.” When things go wrong the coaches look to the captains to help fix things. This can often amount to extra pressure for the captains, but when asked about it none of them seemed worried about it, in fact they seemed ready to embrace it. As far as other players go they seem to have nothing but respect and admiration for their captains. “I feel like everyone does” replied Ryan Mahrer when asked if he looked up to his captains. “They’re good leaders and they get us pumped and ready to play.” The team captains’ ultimate goal is to lead their team to victory. And for the Ralston Valley team captains (Kyle Corbin, Aaron Decino, Robert Wasinger, Danny Deeds, and Trevor Horn) yet another league championship is looming in their future. When asked how to achieve another league championship Danny Deeds had this to say. “Try to prepare the best we can, make sure everyone is workin hard. For these captains becoming the boss extends beyond the boundaries of the football team, the whole school seems to be effected by these outstanding players, students, and just down right good people. Combined they participate in things such as football, track, mmp, student government, and multiple advanced placement classes. What else can we expect from these team captains? Well they seem confident in their ability to win games and seemed ready to be great examples on and off the field.
